Best Area to Stay in Lisbon

Chiado

BEST FOR: Being in the centre of the action

Chiado is one of the most popular areas as it’s one of the most central places to stay in Lisbon. It’s in the centre of all of Lisbon’s main areas that are within walking distance, has plenty of attractions around, shopping and restaurants.

Baixa

BEST FOR: Walking and being in the city centre

There’s no doubt that you’ll see the name of this neighbourhood plenty in your research for Lisbon. The area has been revamped over the last few years and is a collection of straight streets that are low (what Baixa means). It’s a great place to walk and have easy access to transportation for further exploration.

Alfama

BEST FOR: Authentic Lisbon living

Alfama is a charming area of Lisbon that is a truly authentic place to stay in Lisbon. If you want a neighbourhood that feels more local then Alfama is a top choice, though don’t say I didn’t warn you that it is quite a walk up some of the hills here! Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest district and thus cobblestone streets fill the area but be aware that some streets are not accessible for cars and though the #28 tram makes it way through this part of the city transport isn’t as easily accessed as others. It is a more quiet area to stay so if you’re fine with walking then you will be okay as it’s still very close to other popular parts of Lisbon.

Bairro Alto

BEST FOR: Nightlife

If you love to party the Bairro Alto is the place for you. There are still a number of quiet streets in the area too so it doesn’t have to be ruled out if you don’t like to party. During the day there isn’t much to the area but it is still close and within walking distance to plenty of attractions and top areas such as Principe Real.

Principe Real

BEST FOR: Tourist & local living

Pricinipe Real is the latest up and coming neighbourhood in Lisbon that visitors are making their way into. Principe Real sits just north of the popular Bairro Alto, Chiado and Baixa areas but has a more local feel with boutique shops, trendy, hipster cafes and parks. Its location means that you’ll still be within walking distance of the city’s must-see sites, including nightlife, but it’s quiet enough that you won’t have to worry about being disturbed during your beauty sleep.
