Why Retreat in Thailand & What Style of Retreat is Best for You?

Thailand holds a special place in my heart, and I have no doubt it will for you too. It’s actually where I went on my first-ever yoga retreat! Apart from great yoga, Thailand is a very affordable destination, offers incredible cuisine, stunning beaches, and an extremely rich culture.

Beaches & Scenery

Head to the islands if you’re after a beach holiday with yoga included. You’ll be spoiled either on a resort or with views of the beach from your yoga shala like at Vikasa in Koh Samui. But head up north and you could find yourself in Chiang Mai, nestled in the mountains with jungle greenery for as far as the eye can see.

Thai Food & Speciality Cuisine

I may be biased because Thai food is amongst my favourite in the world, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that there is so much diverse food to try in Thailand. Plus there are many options for a retreat that has an Ayurveda focus, detox food, or a diet specialty you may like to try or require.

Spirituality & Meditation

If you’re after a retreat that is dedicated to your personal development, connection to a higher power, or even a silent meditation retreat, you’ll find one in Thailand. Much more than just holiday-focused retreats, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to go quite in-depth during your time in a healing retreat.

Fitness & Martial Arts

Thailand is also quite popular for retreats that combine fitness of many kinds, but most notably Muay Thai, Thailand’s national sport. Together these practices go hand-in-hand. Stretch it out on the mat after you engage and strengthen your muscles.

Best Time to Go on a Retreat in Thailand

If you’re located in the northern hemisphere, the good news is the best time to visit Thailand for fabulous weather (and a sunny retreat) is from November until February, during our coldest months! November to sometimes even April is dry season in Thailand, which is also peak season so be sure to book in advance if you’ve got your eye on a must-go to retreat.

There is an exception here. The east coast islands of Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui (where my favourite retreat in Thailand is located) you’ll find the most rain from September until December. Stick to the summer months of June-August when visiting these islands.

But on the west side of Thailand, the Andaman Islands such as Phuket are best for weather and dry season from November to February.

That being said, Thailand has retreats available year-round and you could even snag yourself a great deal on a retreat and/or flights during the off, rainy season, May-early October.
